Nothing can be determined from this photo.

Looks like a nasty case of camera shake. Try a table top tripod for the camera, maybe a little less magnification and see if internal features can be photographed.

Alan and Barbra, Thank you for your response.
It is very difficult to get a better resolution on that image, I see every detail double through that face, is light getting polarized through that face ?
Alan, microscope has a digital camera attached, so a tripod will not help.

I spent another couple of hours last week and tried to get another view through a different angle.
Please see attached picture, is this any better?

Thanks.

Rakesh

Unfortunately not. Try less magnification, check that the focus point in the camera is aligned with the focus point through the eyepiece(s), focus on an edge of the stone and see how the photo resolves that, compared to how it appeared through the eyepiece.

How about you just take a close-up with your cell phone and post it.
If the photo is too big, pixel wise, send it to me and I'll format it.

I cant tell how old the stone is but from what i see the showing silk @ center & just above, shows signs of heating, lightly broken silk as dots along the inclusions, accepted practice in the industry. a picture of untreated ruby silk intact. - 8)

Ruby302, Thank you for your input. I am told that the ruby is at least 70 years old and I pretty much trust the old lady claiming it. The white cloud in the middle looks like silk to me. Was heat treatment common 70 years back ?

Barbra, I am trying my best to get a better shot - will revert back.

Thanks,
Rakesh

Hi Rakesh.
Rubies were first made synthetically in the late 1800s. By the beginning of the 20th century they were seen often in jewelry and by the 40s they were overwhelmingly abundant.

The first documentation we have on the heat treatment of rubies and sapphires was written by Pliny the Elder in 75AD. Not a new concept.

I would find a cell phone photo more telling than the magnified ones.

Barbra,

Thanks for the tip.

I used my phone to make a foto and my conclusion is that it is synthetic.

Why could I not see the air bubbles with the loupe ?

Many thanks,
Rakesh

Great! Thanks.
Can we get a little more distance on the stone, like:

Image

I have found with colored stones and magnification that less is more.

Morning. I received some photos today from Rakesh.
Here they are:

I enlarged and contrasted the colorless area above:

I would agree with Rakesh. Looks like curved striae. What do y'all think?

From my readings, a slight curve in the internals point to a synthetic material, in a normal ruby the inclusions are usually in-line but cross at @ a 60 degree angle, text-book- 8) [if im wrong, u will see it here, kids!]

I would find a local gemologist. A 30 sec identification in person and one fraught with problems from photos.

Hi Ruby302,

My problem is I am not able to see the slightest of curves in any of the fotos I have made so far.

With some amount of imagination, I can see a few 60 degree angles here and there.

Rakesh
