Hi Alias,
I have not spoken French since high school, so I will answer you in English.
It appears to me that you should put a motor speed controller on your machine to slow it down. You should not require speeds above 2000 rpms.
If your motor is DC, that is feasible with a PWM controller. You can purchase those online.

Bonjour,

Martin

in brief Alias has a problem polishing Sri Lanka sapphire. He uses a copper and a tin disc. He does not comment what is on the disc.
Speed is 1.750 rpm and he thinks about more speed.

Maybe someone can give a hint on how to polish sapphire if possible with the available discs.

Right, I read that and my recommendation was to lower the speed of the machine with a PWM controller if he has a DC motor on the machine. Both Tin and Copper with diamond powder should polish Sapphire.

Hi Thomas,

what speed would you recommend ? I know you sometimes use very low speed. He uses Diamond powder 1200 and X3. Not sure what that is.

It seems, that he gest a good polish on part of the facets and the rest remains dull. From my modest experience I would think he is not flat on the facet.

What would you use for polishing on the copper lap ?

Martin

Bonjour Alias JC

Alias and Martin,
1200 U.S. mesh is about 16 micron nominally. With this grit size do you use a copper charged lap, a plated lap or a metal bonded sintered lap?
My company produces a sintered diamond lap with 12 micron nominal particle size which I found produces a finer finish that is faster to prepolish. I recommend running this at 300 - 1000 rpms. Please liberally flush water on this lap.
Your choices for prepolish 2-4 micron (8000 U.S. mesh) and polish 0-1 micron (60,000 U.S. mesh) are very good. I recommend 300 rpms for prepolish and 200 rpms for polishing. The reason is that you don't want to hydroplane the surface.
I don't know what the particle size of X3 is. That appears to be a proprietary commercial designation.
I believe the Otto Eigner machine has electronic speed regulation.
