Wait, those are two totally different things. Laser ruby is chromium-doped sapphire (Cr3+:Al2O3), but titansapphire is titanium-doped sapphire.

(Supposedly, Ti4+:Al2O3 is called "titansapphire" and Ti3+:Al2O3 is just called "titanium-doped sapphire", but I can't find any evidence for this so I don't know if it's valid. One is Padparadscha-coloured and one is brownish-reddish-orange.)

You may be right! I can say that the color rendered is true- no flash, no lighting, just what indirect light was coming thru the front door. I believe the dopant was Ti4, but I don't really want to call it titansapphire ew! I would rather say created pink sapphire! I love the color!

I have been giving away and cutting pieces of this rod for years. It's almost gone now.

http://www.redoptronics.com/Ti-Sapphire-crystal.html

The most interesting thing about the material is it is singe oriented crystal. If you look at the backlit rod and rotate it. the color changes from a light magenta to a peach/pink color. Some stones cut from this often show both colors. This one does. A simpler cut would probably show the effect more strongly.

A natural spinel 6.5mm .90ct

Cut and polish are excellent but the photography is not, sorry.

Strong emerald green under halogen and shifts toward blue in sunlight.

If you are talking about the 4 "spikes" in the lower part, those were supposed to be the whiskers of the cat :P

That lion turned out great! Definitely a good match for the material too.

This isn't nearly as exciting but I thought they turned out kind of cool--consecutive polished slices from an NC star ruby
Image
It had inclusions in the center of the stone that would have made cabs pretty unexciting but it doesn't detract from the slices nearly as much, and the silk patterning is pretty nice, with a couple of them showing subtle trapiches as well.
