Hi,

So recently I found this portalab on ebay but didn't know much about it except that it was made by Jeff Wildman. So my question is, if it's worth paying $1,225 for a used Portalab?I am new to Gemology, my Bachelor Degree is in engineering geology, but I find this domain much more interesting than what I am doing in Geotechnics.I live in Europe, and in my country, Gemology was recognised as a profession only recently. That being said, I really hope to get to know the Gemology caste better.
P.S. Where can I find good but cheap gemology books to study? Is anyone interested in selling?
P.S. Is the Graduate Pearls program worth doing at GIA?

Kind regards,

Dan

that portalab could worth or not the amount you are reporting. Everything depends by its functional state. Is the microscope pod ok? Aligned? fungus on the lenses? does the illuminated darkfield well works? how about the UV lamps? state of the recharger and batteries? i think the best thing you could do is to ask for these questions to the vendor or have the item inspected by someone knowledgeable about that, my 2 cents only... ;-)

Alberto is completely correct.
Jeff Wildman is an excellent source for gemological instruments.

I can certainly vouch for his products, but not for a used kit on eBay.
