Could be, it does have a resemblance to lower-grade Indian schist-hosted material. Some of these star though they generally don't produce valuable gems.

Could also be quartz. Can you lift it? Is it REALLY heavy? From what it looks like, it should weigh a LOT if it is sapphire.

Dr Hanneman has a great idea. Everyone should have a set of hardness points. :D

Estimating a sphere of radius 2.75" (5.5" diameter - the average of 7 and 4), would be a radius of about 7cm.

the volume of a sphere is (4/3)Pi r^3, so we get a volume of 1,436 cc's. Sapphire is about 4 gm/cc, so this would be 20 carats/cc or approx 28,735 carats.

You have between 1/3 and 1/2 of that. BUT it isn't a sphere and with another dimension it might be smaller. And it might not be "pure". Mica doesn't weigh much.

quarts is 2.71 or 13.5 carats/gm or 19,467 carats under the same calculation.

Best guess from this: I don't know. :-). But it was fun to try.

Please be aware that the majority of corundum in the world is made into sandpaper.
Just because it is sapphire does not make it gem quality.

I do love this kind of material, even though it's not worth much. Those papers ain't goin' NOWHERE.

But do you like it as a specimen, Stephen, or would you break it up and cab some?

I'd definitely put it on my specimen shelf.

Oh yeah, I'm in agreement with you on that--it's not monocrystalline so you aren't getting any good novelty-size stars out of it, and smaller Indian star rough is inexpensive, lets you cut a variety of colors and since it comes as crystals you don't need to work hard to find the c-axis or to establish the outline of the cab.

I hope that you're not serious! The value of the item is as a specimen, and breaking it apart would destroy its value.

Yes, that is the voice of evil Mr. Emery. Don't let him win.
