Hello. I have a question about Spectrum.

I have a taking a Gem Identification course.
For example, Do we see always the band at 437.5 for Non-Chrome Jadeite and Jadeite?
Or, are we not going to see the band for some natural Jadeite?

I think I am not be able to use the spectroscope well yet. So, I am thinking that I am not seeing the band.
But the instructor in the classroom said we don't see the band always...... Is that true?

I'm also in gem ID, the spectroscope is a headache for me as well. I believe if you use a fiber optic light that you can vary the intensity you will see better results.

The 437 band will not always be visible in each example of untreated Jadeite, especially if you are using a mini maglight or similar light source.

However, sometimes it is more important to determine what is not visible rather than what is when performing your identifications. It is the absence of absorption in the red area of the spectrum (indicative of dye treatment) which can allow you to make the separation in many cases.
