I always wonder when they say jewelry is "important" what in the world they mean by it.

I believe that the term 'Important" describes an auction collection that consists of items of a certain high price and prestige range. They use the term "Magnificent" for auctions containing an even higher level of items. So you will see a few times each year the term "Important Gems/Jewelry" and a few times a year "Magnificent Gems/Jewelry". I think this convention is followed by Christie's, Sotheby's, and other auction houses.

Oh. Thanks Steve.
I thought David was asking a redundant question......as every item in this auction is magnificently important.

And here I always thought (for art auctions) it was reserved for the first pieces of an artist with a certain technique, or the first times of a technique (i.e. historically important).
I couldn't figure out how that would apply to many jewelry pieces - especially a jade bangle.

Actually there is an "important" set of earrings in this list of "magnificent" jewelry.

I would define important as a rare, collectable and desirable object.

Every piece of jewelry designed by Rene Lalique is important and magnificent.
Every piece of furniture made by Louis Marjorelle is important, not all are magnificent.
