Does anyone have a good source for YAG? I have never cut a stone from it, but hear it is somewhat easy to cut and looks great. I have rarely seen any during my foraging for material, and it is the required material for this year’s pre master SSC design. Need enough to yield a 12mm finished stone, wife would prefer green this time around.

Hey Kevin, if you check out RusGems, they have tons of YAG. Clear, golden yellow, fluorescent eyeball-searing yellow, blue-purple, light/medium/dark green, and plenty of others. They have an eBay store as well, and there are a few pieces still up on there. If the eBay store doesn't have what you want, just send them an inquiry from their website.

+1 for Facet Shoppe. I got some of the Champagne colored YAG a few years ago for my first competition stone. Beautiful color, it's still one of my favorites.
Facet Shop does have some, but only in the light pink now. He's local to me and I went and picked it up, he told me has some green but sez it was too fractured to get anything useful. Seems like this stuff is a little harder to come by than is reasonable for a SSC material...just sayin.

I've got a buttload of YAG sitting under my bed that I'm selling off and would be happy to sell you some. But also, there's plenty of large YAG rough that shows up on eBay, and if you contact RusGems or any of the other manufacturers they'll sell you large chunks, like kilos worth if you want it.

Ive seen some clear yag for sale on eBay in single stone to larger chunks. Clear doesn’t thrill me, I would prefer Tsavorite green, ruby red or a medium blue. If you have a couple of pieces in the 15x15x10 size range that you would be willing to part with in anything besides clear or pastel shades I would appreciate a pm.
Kevin, If you can't find the colors you prefer I still have plenty of color-change Y.A.G. that under normal soft white household incandescent light exhibits a lavender color. Under 2700K soft white fluorescent lighting it has a light amber color, and under 5000K "natural daylight" fluorescent lighting it appears nearly clear.
A few weeks ago I cut a couple of cross-sections from a 58mm wide boule of the color change Y.A.G. (shown under various lightings) in the photos linked below. And have quartered a couple of them up. I have quartered pieces in the 24gm - 48gm ranges and a couple of larger pieces.
Also have a few quartered up cross-sections of a 53mm wide boule of clear Y.A.G. which weigh close to 30gms each.
Yes I believe it is neodymium-doped. It was manufactured in Charlotte, NC some years ago by either Union Carbide or Allied Chemical. I can't remember which right now. It came out of the collection of a man who used to work at the lab that produced it and who sold off his mineral collection at auction last year.
