Managed to get my hands on about 20kg of rough rubies from Mozambique. If anyone could kindly advice me as to what to do with them that would be much appriecated!

Gotta love Stephen. I let him answer first because he always has a positive spin. He says cabs, slabs and carving where I would have gone with sandpaper.
Mmmm perhaps those pics present more evidence of cracks than the other rocks, but non-the-less i see where you are coming from. Is there any chance that by cutting inside those larger stones (1kg) that the possibility of faceting will become available? I.e better quility inside the rock?
Bwana? What part of Africa are you from with a name like that? Zambia here.
Aha! I see, but is it not possible that by cutting some of the the other stones that are quite large, there may be a possiblity of faceting? i.e better quility inside?

Hi, Can’t say much when the rubies are such rough. My advise: first do a mechanical cleaning , once done put the Rocks for a few days in an Hcl /hno3 solution. This would give view a better view of what you have. Please do t be désappointed if 98percent is looking crap/dark, this is normal. Out of your 20 kg you may get some gems in there. Please post the results! You may reach me by email if you want more details. Enjoy, and have fun

I have been involved in the Gem business in East Africa since the early 1970's.
Not likely to find clear sections inside the material. However, there is a market for your type of stones.

No need for any apology paco-inclusions. As mentioned, there is probably a market for stones like this, but I am a treatment snob. The rest of the world, not so much.
