Ideal usecase for raman. Well, actually bytownite/scapolite more so, they overlap on almost every major indicator, and there was a rash of pale yellow bytownite being sold as scapolite rough a couple years back.

Is it not a bit sad, when you don't have to search and make your mind work, and use your knowledge bit by bit, but only ask from a machine what this stone is ?

75TURBO, I don't think color shift in amethyst (which I refer to as metamerism) would be definitive.
Isi, as someone who uses my GemmoRaman daily, no I don't think it is sad. It is just another tool. Experience is necessary to interpret whether the results given by this tool are correct. Just like all our other tools.

Only a minute for example to separate Taaffeite from Musgravite...
But I agree that it is important to use your knowledge and the classic instruments - you learn so much more about gems.

I like being able to get more specific and detailed information more quickly. It's not like using a refractometer or sg scale is any more sophisticated or mentally stimulating, plus I don't like the smell of refractometer fluid. If I want fun and games with a stone (above and beyond what I get from the raman, which is decidedly fun and interesting) that is what my fleet of microscopes are for.

It is about as sad as getting to fly over oceans instead of having to swim.
Raman is a great technologically based tool. But it takes skill to use it to its fullest capabilities just like any other tool.
I am never sad using it, I am always happy I have it.
