I have a Scintillator 88 base and XS-3 faceting head that have worked like a champ for 13 years. In the past several weeks I've been hearing some intermittent noises from the Leeson 1/4 hp DC motor. It started running slow over the weekend and then completed stopped - no noises, no nothing. I'm guessing it's either the capacitor or the brushes, and not the speed controller (but I could be wrong). I called and emailed Poly-Metric early this week but have not gotten any response yet. I'd like to get this resolved ASAP so I checked with other Leeson motor vendors and I can get replacement OEM brushes and a capacitor. Any suggestions for anything else it could be before I place the order?

I was able to get in touch with Zane and he suggested starting with a brush replacement because it's the cheapest potential fix. Might be time to start thinking about having a replacement motor on hand for these situations.

Kind of like our Foredom flex shaft motors - we always make sure we have spare brushes on hand. Silly folk around here used to just replace a full motor when all that was needed were brushes and a quick lube. Once someone wanted to buy a new $1,200 steam cleaner when all it needed was a $2 switch...

The easiest way to ascertain if the motor or controller has malfunctioned is to try to power the motor from another similar dc power source. If that works, then it is a controller issue.
We have two Polymetric machines in our shop. Within the past year the controllers in each have failed.
While Zane provided replacements under warranty, I bought a spare from the manufacturer... Minarik Drives, www.minarikdrives.com, 1-800-MINARIK. The controller is easy to replace. My part number is: RD16U.
