Pardon if this is a novice question, but might anyone know if the IIDGR Diamond View is currently the only machine used by labs & gemologists for separating natural type II diamonds from type II lab-grown diamonds? (*Assuming that a stone-in-question has already undergone testing by machines such as the GIA id100 or the HRD J-Screen with a refer result given, and all imitations like CZ and moissanite are already ruled out)

Would testing using the IIDGR Diamond View as it is now (the updated version w/ filters) be the only (or) best next step to take in the process, if one wanted to take the identification further? Is there a newer machine that could replace it soon via the same or similar technology / methods? Thanks very much in advance for any insights on this, just curious mostly. :)

I'm sorry.
Where did you get the information that this instrument is the "only" one used by labs and gemologists?
I don't think that is true.

Apologies, I was just told by a colleague that it was the only "next step" instrument that labs use for separating type 2 diamonds after using the GIA id100 (or HRD J-Screen). So.. I was informed that these two instruments refer a small amount of natural diamonds- around 2%, and these would then be checked using the DiamondView.

I wasn't sure about this, which is exactly why I posted the question on this thread, looking to ask if there were any other instruments (newer or otherwise) capable of further identifying this 2%. :)

when a type II completely lacks N3 and other features which can allow its identification as a natural diamond, the ultimate weapon is fluorescence imaging under Deep UV. the most common unit for this purpose is the diamondview.
as a sidenote i would stress that many natural IIa do contain enough N3 not showing up in absorption UV-VisNIR but that can be identified by appropriate instrumentation, only the extremely pure ones really need to undergo the growth structure observation in deep UV.

Thank you for the helpful information Alberto! I didn't know that some natural IIa do contain N3 defect.

May I ask a bit further- for these particular stones you mentioned that have N3, but where N3 will not show up in absorption when using a UV-VisNIR, what appropriate instrumentation would I need to obtain in order to actually see these? I'd very much like to acquire one if there are any cheaper than the DiamondView.

Again, much appreciation for the insight! :D

You are welcome.
N3 in those stones can show up in fluorescence spectroscopy with an adequate source. This unit works: https://hrdantwerp.com/en/equipment/detail/j-screen

I will verify what Alberto has said. I purchased this unit.

Everytime you stumble on a blue fluorescing IIa you can be sure to find N3 in it...

Thanks guys, much appreciated! :) By the way, also on another note- would you happen to know any alternative fluorescence microscopy instrument (aside from the DiamondView)? just for checking the small percentage of stones that get referred by the J-screen?

Nothing on the market sofar, and an alternative product, if it will exist, would not be so different....

I wonder how hard it would be to set up a normal fluorescence microscope to work for this use. Presumably you just need the right light source and filters. Probably not really cheaper though...

Is it more the filters or the light source? Or the high-sensitivity camera?
