A friend gave me a handful of "Helenite" marbles. While hardly gemstones, I decided to cut one for him. Here's an iPhone pic...

Here's a piece of quartz that was full of rutile, again with cell phone...

The first pic has three type IDs embedded in the pic???? But you stated it is a marble???
Are you not sure and believe it is just glass of some type?

I probably should not have left that info on the pic, as I just keep those types of photos for my logbook. I used the RI and CA info to set the angles for the round.

Here's a link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helenite

Here's a pic of the "marbles"...

I think it's probably the case that no particular piece of colorful glass is any more or less 'helenite' than any other, since there's nothing to suggest that any helenite actually incorporates any st helens ash, much less contains any as a major component. That's kind of a longstanding issue, though it's been an effective marketing ploy. It does cut up beautiful stones and you did a wonderful job on that one. I'm sure your friend was very happy with it!

Another quick moon cut from that grey moonstone I picked up, better orientation this time, but I still need to work on it to get the adularescence in the crescent faceup instead of just the side.
Image
The platelets seem to be reflecting light from the blue adularescence rather than directly, if I cover up one of the sides they immediately blink off... this stuff seems to have some serious potential.

Dor,

I think you will find that the portuguese cut sells well, and works well on pretty much any shape, as long as the material is not very dark.

Lots of variations and tricks you can use to maximize this pattern too.

exactly my thinking.
it's a bit more work than the standard brilliant, but it pays off.
gives a lot of spark for the extra effort.
going to try an oval soon.

Couple of Pink Tourmalines, baby gum type hue. My first post in here showing where I am at. Lots to learn but much better now than when I started using only a dremel and some home made jam peg type thing... ugh that was painful

Anyway, Tourmalines from Afghanistan origin. Original Rough was a lot more saturated, but ended up cutting away the saturated bits. Partly because of inclusions, partly because of inexperience :( happening a lot to me lately but at least I am spotting the error now.

Need to work on my photography skills, specially lighting these finicky little ones. Just using Cellphone at the moment.
