Amazing natural mineral this variety of tourmaline, too bad for the inclusions. Even in its raw form it is so beautiful. Once again the camera picks up the inclusions unfairly though, much cleaner in person. Started as a 6.1 carat crystal and ended in this 3.0 carat custom design which I thought was original, in that I wanted to break away from the usual emerald design and enhanced the bicolor effect by breaking the facets through the middle to blink one or the other color. I later found out it isnt too original after all as I came upon a similar idea in some notes from J. Graham I believe.

The pleochroic nature of this mineral is showing quite strongly in the photos, it is not that apparent in real life but unmistakably seen here as a bow tie effect. Very firey material which just soothes the soul, if only it came in bigger sizes!

Czochralski Pulled Syn Alexandrite cut in Scott Laborie's Deep Star design. Optimized with GCS. Photo taken with a macro lens on my cell phone with a two-tone LED light ring. Top photo is mixed lighting.

Finally had some time to get this one done.
"Beyond the Limits of Sanity" the design is based on Arya Akhavan's design Limit of Sanity, with some scaling and some added features. 22.6cts, 16x16.9x12.45mm, The East African Light Blue Topaz rough this was cut from was 71+ carats, I had to trim it down to get this clean section from. The man I got this rough from stated it was from an area around Tunduru, Tanzania. I can't find any deposit of Topaz in the exact area but maybe from a neighboring deposit not sure. He was an early miner of the Tanzanite mines and friend of the Maasai People. He also spent many years as one of only a few that certified radiation free of imported irradiated cut topaz set for the jewelry market.
I would like to dedicate this gem to Dr. Horst Krupp.
I believe this may have depicted his great mind as he left us a little over a year ago due to Parkinson's Disease, a great mind trapped inside. He was a gentle and brilliant man with a wealth of experiences, knowledge always willing to share.

As you know Horst was always interested in posing unsolvable riddles. Add the African environment, some alcohol, and nights at mining camps with nothing else to do, and the conversation could get a little far out there! LOL!
Back in the day when we were first experimenting with radiation and heat treatments we were throwing everything under the Sun in different radiation sources. My Brother and I were the largest users of the San Diego Linac machine. We even had some success with doctoring up golf balls. Fascinating times.

Thank you for this picture , Duncan ! Impressive creation !! The jeweler has brought out the citrine very well; the perspective, the light of the citrine, everything comes together in a beautiful harmony
