Hello Good Day,

I am a filmmaker and location scout for south america, especially areas around the Olmec and Toltec civilizations, I am wondering if you could guide me where I can find Opal to purchase in the markets in Mexico, South and or North America. I am have been searching where I can find deposits, stores or markets that sell. In am also interested in Green Obsidian, Amozonite, Emerald and carnelian in raw form.

Any information would be helpful,

Thank you!

If you want to go to the source, there are a number in the US: Spencer, Idaho, Virgin Valley, Nevada, Opal Butte, Oregon for some. There are other sources in Idaho as well, though I don't know them off the top of my head.

If by "green obsidian" you mean transparent, there ain't no such thing. That is man made glass and fobbed off as natural obsidian or moldavite (caused by meteorite impact). (At least that is what I have always heard from people I trust. Also true of 'blue obsidian'. There is obsidian that has a blue sheen, of course.)

To the best of my recollection the majority of Mexican opal(fire) comes from deposits in and around the State of Chihuahua. Have no clue of any current markets directly accessible there, doesn't mean there isn't. Most of it is brought north by the families through ElPaso and eventually into Quartzsite and Tucson. But of course into the mainstream American gem industry. But I assume your looking for actual contacts to connect with, there are numerous gem show sites that post vendors of past and upcoming vendors by commodity. There is also Mindat.org you can locate deposits all over the globe

If older sources would be a help, for US, Canada, Mexico, and some of the Caribbean Islands, Sinkankas' book "Gemstones of North America" might be useful. Looks like the 2-volume 2nd edition came out in 1975 or there abouts.
