Hello

I am looking for reviews on appraisal software.
Which do you use? Do you use software at all? Should I just use my own template?

Thanks

I don't use software.
Too many variables with every assignment.

If I was going to invest in one, I think I would go with the GemGuide's appraisal software.

I have used Gemguide for several years. I go from store to store and do mostly bread and butter jewelry (halo rings, studs, ect). It works well for me as my computer skills are only average. Prices for common gems in the market are built in and updated for easy reference. Photos are easy to add. Metsls prices are easy to access. Great for cranking out easy to value items.
Down side ....not much help if you do a lot of designer items. You also buy your appraisals on a subscription basis, a buck a piece. Not much but if you do 1000 a year for 5 years.....
Works for me, but again it would depend on your clientele.

i bought gemguide's appraisal software and their world of color system at the start of this year and have to say its sufficient for my needs. The article description can either be built using keywords for the majority of simple appraisals or you're able to manually fill if the descriptions don't cover the details of the piece.
world of color has been a fantastic system for colored stone jewelery and while the pricing software tends to land on the low side its helpful as well.

What type of appraisals? Insurance, valuation? Both all any, or just doesn't matter? As Barbra stated in a lot of situations Gemguide and many appraisal systems do not suffice. Our recommendation is Gemguide.

There are no appraisal software options which are USPAP compliant.
NAJA has adopted a new guide for minimum standards, which is essentially USPAP.

Lots more i's to dot and t's to cross which aren't addressed in current software.

Appraisal software is essentially designed for those items dropped off at a jewelry store by customers who want appraisals. They are quick and generic, providing enough information to have the item added to one's insurance, but lacking in a clear definition of the market(s) addressed and legal limitations of the document.
So what's the big deal?
If your appraisal document ever finds its way into a courtroom, lack of USPAP protocol will end badly for you.

Not completely familiar with the requirements under USPAP but I've been using Gemguide's and it has a spot for pretty much anything. You can manually write in descriptions, add new reports, change/add other required documents / information in and there's a section for appraiser's notes that you can record all the information on how you came to the conlcusions / where you got the comparables / pricing information from so it's sufficient for anything we need here in Canada.

There are a few new ones that are looking to be okay as well like www.instappraise.com but it just depends on what you need the software to do. I've been a computer technician for years and was thinking of making my own systems but I'll be honest after trying/using the Gemguide one there was no reason for me to reinvent the wheel. They have a good system and it's quite easy to modify to work in any situation. Being based in the US I'm sure they're trying to keep up with whatever requirements you need but as I said, I can't really comment on that side.

Like I said, there are others that exist. I don't use that one but from some of the people here in Canada that said they use it they liked it. Personally I just use the Gemguide Appraisal software because it works.

Isn't "Instappraise" software something that was relatively recent and heavily marketed on JCK. Sometime around the divorce of AGTA and the JCK. I do not really now much about the software and its capabilities, just remember getting bombarded through the JCK registration right around the split of the two shows.

I'm not sure.
I looked through some promotional examples they sent me. Wouldn't work for anyone who was a member of an appraisal association......not USPAP compliant.

If I were to purchase an appraisal software program, I think the best is Quantum Leap’s PAS :
