Is it worth to authenticate in lab ?

For those who are new to gemology. Just getting started in the industry and have a question about the basics? No question is too small to answer.

Is it worth to authenticate in lab ?

Post by Paul_G »

Hello, I am a novice and I am trying to figure out a pink corundum stone. I bought the amateur microscope on Amazon allowing to create computer images. Can anybody please advise if there is a chance it is non-synthetic, untreated stone or it is definitely one of those ? Please find attached some images of inclusions received through the microscope. Thank you, Paul

Sorry I later realized that this topic probably had to be placed in "Colored Stones" segment. Also after viewing other similar topics, some additional preparation needs to be done, such as better more indicative microscope images. I don't have yet other devices for ex. to measure RI and other parameters, but I used diamond tester and it indicates probably corundum, conductivity just below diamonds. This stone was set in the silver ring dated to around 1920-s. Thank you. Paul

Thank you for the feedback. I agree that some portions look like bubbles, which means synthetic. It is very difficult for the novice as myself to see what components what mean.

Thanks again. I probably need to start with some guidance including from this forum on how to effectively use the microscope to study gemstones. There is some learning curve in gemology similar to other fields.

May I ask the inclusions question about one more stone, ruby corundum. Is there some chance it is not synthetic ? Attached are the pictures.
Also is there some formal text book / reference on corundum inclusions , difference between Natural vs Synthetic vs Treated natural ?
Thank you.

Some additional pictures, but I believe the lines there can't be defined as rutile needles found in natural rubies. Thank you.
