handheld microscope

Post by AtelierVLJ »

Hello folks, I'm posting this with the caveat that I am a bumbling hobbyist, but I was just made aware of the existence of what are sold as "Children's handheld microscopes" and am wondering if anyone else has had the opportunity to try one of them?

Met up with an acquaintance who runs a collector's store, and he uses it to grade and identify trading cards. Digital viewing screen, built in 1080p camera, four set levels of zoom from x200-x1000. He gave me a go at using it on a piece of rough I happened to have with me, and it was surprisingly functional, with one big caveat: the focus depth is kind of terrible when looking at big pieces of rough. You can at most see a couple of millimeters into the material before hitting the maximum end of the focus range. The adjustment tool also seems to stick at either extreme end of the focus range, but that's easy to fix. The focus range is more of a dealbreaker there, but also only relevant when looking at things that are too wide to fit inside the viewing cage. However, they are cheap as dirt and very portable, so I'm considering getting one, if for no other reason than that they seem fun and potentially have some use cases when out and about.

This was the specific microscope I tried, but there are a bunch of similar ones on the market:

Anyone here tried one? If so, what thoughts did you have about it?

Similar (but usually differently laid out) all-in-one digital scopes do get some use but they don't have everything you'd want for proper gem inspection. They'll typically leave you wanting more after a while but for the price you can have a lot of fun.
