I've been doing some online reading of late and note that there are those who tell us that Crazed Opal can be restored. I have never heard of such a thing and have a few stones that could use that attention. Does anyone have a shop to recommend? I also have a fine black that has an internal fracture that I'd love to have neutered

Hi Mervyn,
I've been cutting opal for more years than I'll admit to and I've heard many claims about restoration of crazed opals and "stabilization" of cracky opal from northern Nevada and elsewhere. In practice I've never personally seen a process that really worked as billed.
That said, one of my fellow members of the American Opal Society, Stan McCall, claims on his website to be able to repair cracked opals satisfactorily. I haven't seen any "before and after" examples of his process, and I'm in no way personally endorsing it. But if you wish to explore further his website link is:
