I downloaded this several weeks ago. The first time I installed it, I got error messages. SO I uninstalled. THen When I tried to reinstall it told me I couldn't because it was already installed. UTTER FRUSTRATION! So I contacted the vendor and they very quickly sent me a link to an alternate download with a patched version that DID work. And I have been happily enjoying the program ever since.

Thanks for your opinions. Hmmm ... think I'll skip downloading it. I agree with Barbra ... it probably is a great program, but unless I get into appraisals, I don't think I can justify paying their price :? .

I tried the software when it first came out. I have the present demo as well. The initial trial package showed more features: interface to your inventory and outside gem databases, grading adjustment, and more. I believe Stuller picked up the exclusive after that for a while.

The present demo doesn't show off such features. BUT for over $500, I wonder what features are not in the demo. I think the download site explains a little about what should be done to get the full benefit of the system - calibrations, lighting, and such. GemE indicated the it was also working toward a standardization of lighting and shooting conditions, etc, to make the syst4m more accurate. Theoretically, you would take a pic, pull it into GemE, then match the color with a color displayed by GemE. You can do that with the demo software. WHEW!!! Looks like it will get a little more expensive than its present cost.

That said, it is a neat package. If the "square" could be purchased as a stand alone for considerably less, I would buy, perhaps even recommend it. For those new to grading gem color, it is exceptionally useful I would think. GIA is, or is contemplating, using the system, for its students, and perfecting the system with GemE, I believe.

If you haven't looked at Doos' site or the Gemology Project, both accessible from this forum, I recommend it. The color tutorial there probably does everything the GemE does, except pull a pic from your database. One of our programmer members might talk to Doos about adding that capability to his system. Pulling the stone from a database into either system has its problems, though. The questions of shooting parameters remains critical. I think you are safer doing a simple calibration of you monitor, and matching your stone to your monitor with stone in hand.

IMHO

your thoughts?

Right... I wonder if having a free similar tool like that on the web (say, related to a website like this, where exposure, support and peer-review is a breeze!) wouldn't make allot more sense.

If it really is a communication tool, then let it be one used for lots and lots of communication ... with a little monetized value added, not the other way around. 8)

Random thought. Just one I've been thinking of for quite a long while.

O have seen GemWizard. Not terribly impressed with the graphics though.

The concept on YEY.Be of using models to teach color seems better :P

I would be delighted to see the features of the two put together, as they fit so well, methinks. Would be delighted to see to it as well.

I agree. For the asking price, the system will never become a universal tool, and eventually will go the way of all the others. RIP.
