As a follow-up to the Villiaumite I posted under the "photos" topic, here is another obscure gem material that might make an interesting quiz.

Image

Now, what can I say about this one. Well, like Villiaumite it is not usually seen as a cut stone. It's RI and SG are both relatively low but it is a natural material and hasn't been treated. It's African in origin.

That's pretty vague but might be good for a few guesses, I'll add more info later.

Brad

Hi,

Colourless African emerald, pretty rare material outside the ebay world.

Some wild guesses:

Pollucite (probably not)
Jeremejevite (does it come in colorless)
Thaumasite (colorless, from Africa, maybe?)
Hambergite (colorless)

In all fairness, I think we need some clues:
Singly or doubly refractive?
Associated minerals.
Igneous? Metamorphic? Sedimentary?

Do tell what that beautiful green stone is in your avatar is? I saw you posted it today and it looked very nice next to my red stone in my avatar.

Yes, jeremejevite can be colorless (some sample of Madagacar).
I think like Ben P for jeremejevite. ;-)

Barbra, of course more info was to follow, the intro was just a bit of a teaser. Curious as to what the initial guesses would be - and low and behold it was our self-proclaimed "village idiot" which called it.

This is faceted Gaylussite, an evoraporite (so sedimentary I guess) from the seasonal Lake Amboseli in Kenya.

RI: 1.444, 1.515
SG: 1.96
Moh's hardness: 2.5
Water Soluble

I'll have to make it tougher next time. Already have a few in mind

Ben - you're right, I just started playing with the avatars yesterday. This is a Chrome Diopside that I had on the site a couple of months ago. Some pictures I just always like.

Oh and jett, I think you should get a color change garnet as well - now to find someone to give you one
