I finally had too much spare time today and thought I would give this quizzing thing another try. This time we have 6 stones in which color I've tried to minimize color as a distinguishing feature between the gems. The only condition is that you must guess all 6 each time and I will only let you know how many of the six you got right - not which ones.

Oh, and I decided to write each clue in the first person. It may be silly, but it made it more fun for me while coming up with the clues.

Alright, here we go...

Image

Stone 1: I am a bit of an unusual color for my species, but I don’t mind as it sets me apart from my American cousins. I make friends quite easily – in fact, I have share a basic building block with two of the other gems in the quiz.

Image

Stone 2: My chemical makeup is actually very similar to one of the other gems in the list. Again, I am a bit of an unusual color. Oh yeah, and my SG is lowest of the six stones.

Image

Stone 3: It doesn’t really bother me that I am a product of weathering. Nor that my SG is the highest of all six stones. My confidence is restored by my range of attractive colors.

Image

Stone 4: My type locality occurs in the country with the world’s largest national park, though the vast majority of my kin are mined elsewhere. I'm doubly refractive was pleased to have tied as the hardest stone on the list.

Image

Stone 5: My unique color is my greatest asset and sets me apart from some of my relatives. We are actually used quite widely in jewelry. Perhaps I've said too much, so that’s my five cents for now.

Image

Stone 6: I’m the softest of all five stones and obscure as a faceted stone. Though my species could be from a number of localities, I personally prefer a Mediterranean climate. Mine is a home famous for the mineral based revenue it once provided to the state.

That's it for now! Anyone care to play?

All six are clearly examples of Miraculum. It is a close relative of Unobtanium. ;)

Unobtanium, was my first thought also.
Brad P, you are kind of evil. I am going to have to give this some thought.

I'll be back

Well, I'll admit it, just a touch evil. Really there are only a couple here that may make the "never heard of it" list.

I promised this one would be a little more involved!

1. Scapolite

2. Labradorite Feldspar

3. Clinochlore

4. Sheridanite

5. Emerald

6. Bonamite (Smithsonite)

Ben P.

Don't know about you but, I was having a heck of a time getting an RI on these stones. Rubbing my computer screen across my refractometer was tough.
It was brutal trying to get an SG also. I had to use my bath tub, bathroom scales, rope and duct tape. It was brutal. :smt105

Now everyone knows I am joking right?

1.
2.When I think of a low SG, I think of opal. This could be a faceted translucent blue Peruvian opal....or not.
3.
4. Largest national park is in Greenland: Kornerupine was first found in Fiskernaes, Greenland. It was named after the Danish geologist and explorer of Greenland, A. N. Kornerup. The hardness of kornerupine is 7. So we know that (if my guess is correct), everything on the list with one other exception is softer than 7.
5.
6.

Thanks Barbra,

I got the clue of Greenland. I think I just over thought the other questions trying to tie a few of the gems into a Group.

Thanks again

Yeah, EXCEPT the weathered gem has the highest SG...couldn't be opal.

Somewhere in my brain, peridot is silicate. Have to look that up. Even though I don't like BP very much right now  I do like getting my brain thinking in a new or should I say old way.

I don't think any of the gems in the quiz are peridot because it is idiochromatic...and has a definite yellowish modifier.
