I've been using the free trial of this for about three weeks, in conjunction with the Guide, for my appraisal business. I've been very happy with the details they incorporate into the pricing structure more so than the Guide..

Any opinions before I buy it? (It's almost $500  )

Thanks!

Thanks for that link! I wasn't even aware of this new program.

I suggest we all download the trlal, especially if already a subscriber to The Guide. I'd love some comparisons, especially with our members who are regular buyers and sellers.
I'll download the program when I get back to San Francisco.

"Prices are calculated according to information provided by leading gem trade consultants. "

That is an interesting idea. I would love to know more about their pricing methodology. Are there any Gemepeople here on the forum? One of my real problems with any pricing system is that it can not move quickly enough to account for very rapid changes in supply.

I keep hearing that these things are only "rough guides" and this is used as a "starting point" but your knowledge of the trade, your own market, and judicious adjustments allowing for ever-changing market conditions will make it far more useful. So, how can this "starting point" be useful if it can easily be off by a factor of 2x, 3x, 5x?

The problem is, the changes in this industry are sometimes extreme and very rapid. In other words, sometimes I make the rounds with my regular dealers in Bangkok and visit the market in Chanthaburi for a couple of weekends in a row and I don't see hardly any quality 1 to 2-carat spessartite at all. The next trip, this same spessartite is raining from the sky. Everyone has it and it's beautiful and cheap. This would seem to seriously limit the value of such a program.

If anyone has information on how "the guide" addresses such problems I would like to hear it. Not innuendo or marketing hype, but actually how they collect data that they claim to collect from the wholesale markets. Is there a network of dealers that submit pricing information based on real trades? How are they selected? Are these dealers in a wide variety of stones, or a few particular specialties? In other words, are you letting a specialist in lesser-know garnets also submit pricing on the occasional ruby that he buys?

I'm not buying into a pricing guide yet, but am willing to listen to anyone who wants to share their knowledge about the actual techniques employed in this "price guide" niche.

Finding prices for colored stones for replacement can be simplified if you find a trusted vendor a member of the AGTA. I use Stuller as one of my references. winstone
