This can be a sister thread to “Off the dop…” But the emphasis is on how a stone changed.
Here’s an example.
This is a dark garnet (8.6 carats), which I mentioned in another thread. The white paper test shows it is well qualified for a sandpaper material.
This is an “after” pic (1.9 carats, 22% recovery).

Hi, Folks:
I did an experiment.
This tourmaline (3.95 carats) has a decent A/B color…
and an unfortunate-looking C color. The usual way to cut this type of rough is the opposed bar. I was curious what if the C axis is cut lower than the C.A (38 degrees).
This is the finished stone (1.3 carats, 32% recovery). This stone has an inverted pyramid pavilion and an opposed bar top. It is a rectangle so only the pavilion facets on the C axis are cut at lower than the C.A. A checkerboard top may work as well.
