Hi, Folks:

This can be a sister thread to “Off the dop…” But the emphasis is on how a stone changed.

Here’s an example.
Image This is a dark garnet (8.6 carats), which I mentioned in another thread. The white paper test shows it is well qualified for a sandpaper material.

Image This is an “after” pic (1.9 carats, 22% recovery).

Take care.
Mitch

The idea came from a thread in Colored Stones that is in the first 10 listed at the moment...

gsellis, what stones did you use for the layers? what kind of cut is that? I guess an opposed bar design would mix up the colors.

CZ - And the cut is just a basic rectangle.

Hi, Folks:

I did an experiment. :?:
ImageThis tourmaline (3.95 carats) has a decent A/B color…
Image and an unfortunate-looking C color. The usual way to cut this type of rough is the opposed bar. I was curious what if the C axis is cut lower than the C.A (38 degrees).
ImageThis is the finished stone (1.3 carats, 32% recovery). This stone has an inverted pyramid pavilion and an opposed bar top. It is a rectangle so only the pavilion facets on the C axis are cut at lower than the C.A. A checkerboard top may work as well. :-k

You can still see the light purple-ish bit, and the big window is closed, so I I still like it, and it's still cool with the bi-color. :)

Hey, I just remembered I do have some old photos of stones I had done where I had shot the rough first!

Zircon, 34 carats

Finished and set: ~11 carats. Obviously this one is long gone.

Apologies for the pictures. Some of these are so old they were taken with a Sony Mavica!
