Hi -

I don't have the budget to buy a real microscope but I came across a 'pocket microscope' from Deutsche Optik with a stand and light.

Achromatic; all metal; three magnifications - 40x (f.o.v. = 1mm), 50x (f.o.v. = 0.9 mm), 60x (f.o.v. = 0.8 mm).

The stand is a solid block of aluminum with a set screw to tighten the scope.

The light source is a plastic penlight.

All for $169.

Is this worth considering?

Save your money.
Buy a set of triplet magnifiers 7x 14x 10x 14x and 20x and a couple of maglights and gem tweezers and have money left over.

I have never heard of Deutsche Optik. That is a very damning piece of data.
I bet I could name ten German optical firms that most people have never heard of.

Edit: They are a high priced retailer selling boyscout toys.

Alberto - It's from a catalog, so no link.

G4Lab - I was hoping you would chime in. Thanks, I'll save my money and follow your advice.

Maybe the fact that they also sell old German WWII stuff should have been a hint....

Empress ... FWIW, I went through the entire GIA GG distance education course with only a 10x loupe. Yes, it would have been great to have a microscope, but I sure learned to identify a lot of inclusions with only that loupe (helps a lot in the field!). Save up your money and purchase a good microscope. Gene helped me out (I bought a great used one!) ... I'm sure he'll do the same for you :D .

Earthling -

The one I saw was not nearly as nice and without the extras. That looks neat for field stuff.
