Here's something very curious. A vendor on ebay has a spinel for sale with a "cert". The "cert" says "evidence of heat enhancement has been found in this stone."

I have read the GIA articles on heating spinel from Tanzania, but this is supposed to be a Burmese stone. I've written to the vendor about this and will post his response here.

HERE is the auction in question.

The vendors reply:

Hi,to be honest,it is a typo error,as you know spinel is not treated.I should not have listed this gem,but was short of items to list, and ebay are on my case for not listing enough gems, can you believe that.I am quite sure regular customer will win it,and know from me all my gems are genuine as listed. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, but i will have this cert re-done at the weekend.Kind regards, fareastgems.

:D lol, could hardly read the cert either, where is SPL lab? on the cert is has "evidence of heat enhancement," but in his/her description it states: "none" for treatments-guess the seller made a mistake in the description of the stone.

looking forward to hearing what the seller has to share with you, jason, about the treatment of the stone since it supposedly is a burmese spinel.

by the way-how do you like your new "eyeballs?" i have them as well-for about 9 years now-thanks to myopia or nearsightedness from cataract surgery (pita), use them mainly to drive the car or watch colorvision-. i've sat and stepped on mine countless times, lol. (and misplace them frequently)

Err...stating that something is heat treated on a gemstone report is more than a typo. A typo would mean it was spelled wrong, not a completely wrong statement.

And is that usual for gemstone labs to make massive errors like that? No quality control?

Sounds like he owns or at least has a lot of influence with the 'gemlab'

either that the lab is real and made a right call

We all know by now that spinel (at least some) are heat treated on a regular basis.

I see Burmese Spinel rough that appears to be melted together. The treaters say that often it cracks with the heat and it is usually a waste of electricity.
