Aaron J. Celestian and Richard Edley for G&G wrote:Located about 60 miles east of San Diego, a new emerald deposit has been discovered in the Julian Mining District (figure 1). This area is known for pegmatite mines and hydrothermal mineral deposits; however, none of those are known to have produced emeralds to date. The emeralds (example shown in figure 2) were all collected by author RE and son Bruce Edley near the surface and are embedded in a biotite schist host rock. Most of the recovered single crystals have a translucent dark green color and inclusions, and they are typically smaller than 2 cm. A few light-colored green beryl crystals have been recovered from a nearby pegmatite. Their formation was likely correlated with metamorphic and hydrothermal processes associated with regional tectonism.

New Emerald Locality in Southrn California
This is right in your backyard 1bwana1, right? We're expecting a guided tour.
Re: New Emerald Locality in Southrn California
Yes, I was aware of that find. However, I have not yet had a chance to go and see it for myself. It is on my list of things to do.

Very cool! First the several in NC, then that little one in Montana and now California. I'm sure I am forgetting some other small US emerald locale here too.

I guess I missed the Montana one. Any links?

Thanks daniele. I would be more inclined to call that green beryl than emerald. I have collected better specimens myself at Railway Dyke in Washington.

I'm in that area all the time as my parents live about 10 miles away in Ramona and would love to visit, however I do not know any of the mining claim owners in that area and it is all private land.

Re: New Emerald Locality in Southrn California
Paul,
I sense a field trip coming. Lets find out where it is and go. I love finding new deposits.
I will start making some inquiries with the local mineral hounds.
Maybe Greg is in too?
My instincts say that we will be looking for the Emerald in a contact zone between the Julian Schist, and a pegmatite intrusion. Probably in and area with coarse grain Biotite mineralization.
Just the kind of thing my portable RAMAN Spectrometer was designed for.

Re: New Emerald Locality in Southrn California
Unless it is in the Gem Trails of Southern California I am not much help in locating a Emerald from a schorl, geologically speaking. I can most definitely carry water, have a couple of Horst's mining picks.
I know someone that might be of help, I am sure both of you know who he is. I'll reach out to him and see what he knows.

I'm up for a field trip anytime!
I won't be much help in the geology aspect, but I can carry supplies and dig enthusiastically
If we were able to get something set up, I imagine Nathan and a couple of my other co-workers in the lab may be interested as well.

Re: New Emerald Locality in Southrn California
All,
We have been unable to locate the deposit so far. But one of my students (also currently just the final away from getting his GG), just bought a house and has moved to Julian. It is #1 on our list to find out where this deposit is and do a field trip. I will keep everyone posted.
