Recent donation of faceting equipment

Post by wilsonintexas »

I have been teaching faceting at the Dallas Gem and Mineral Society for a while. Recently a former member donated 2 Raytech Shaw faceting machines (which i have never used but can see the advantage when teaching). There was also a large amount of rough.

I have been able to strup the hand pieces down and free them up. I am retrofitting a dad to them. Two do not have a vernier, and one has a 1/4 degree vernier.

There were several pieces that I am not familiar with want to know what i have before I work with it.

There is a piece of chrome dioxide
Several pieces of Victoria stone a dark emerald and a large piece of a different green

There is about 500 grams of texas topaz some large pieces. (Is there an easy way to see if these are color fast? I know some fade in sunlight)

Some (about 40) large pieces of peridot 10+ grams each, All very clean and a nice green

26 bags each with 123 gram bags of a green material labeled best 1/3 XLW

All have fracture lines but will get a nice stone out of them if you are careful with the preforms.

I have not had time to pull an ri on the material.

My basic question is are any of these pieces that should be saved for some special cuts or should be set aside for closer examination?

I look forward to working with the Raytech. I have 3 students lined up.
